ANDRE LEON TALLEY

The fashion industry has seen its share of larger-than-life personalities. Andre Leon Talley will go down as one of the giants

The fashion industry has seen its share of larger-than-life personalities. Andre Leon Talley will go down as one of the giants: Even people who aren't fashion insiders would recognize the unmistakable Talley as he swans his 6'6 frame into a runway show, sweeping his signature cape to one side as he takes his seat in the front row. Now, the former editor-at-large of American Vogue and current host of the Sirius XM show "Radio Andy" is the subject of a new documentary, The Gospel According to Andre.

The film, directed by Kate Novack, tells the remarkable story of Talley's ascent from a childhood in the South in the era of Jim Crow to the tippety-top of the fashion biz. The boy who wallpapered his room in Vogue clippings has had no trouble holding his own with the legends of the industry, from his earliest jobs assisting Diana Vreeland at the Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute and working for Andy Warhol at Interview for $50 a week, to his longtime tenure as one of Anna Wintour's key consiglieres. Along the way, he's emerged as an outspoken advocate for diversity in fashion, both on-the-runway and behind-the-scenes, and served as a guru to numerous famous fashion plates, including Michelle Obama, who he advised on dress for her husband's first Inauguration.

The Gospel According to Andreisn't Talley's first time on film. Not hardly: The icon has made previous appearances in the TV shows Sex and the City and Empire, turned up in the Vogue-centered docs The September Issue and First Monday in May, and even had a cameo in one of Mariah Carey's music videos. Notably, he was also featured in the Valentino: The Last Emperor, talking about his great friend, Mr. Valentino, for whom he later wrote the introduction to the book At the Emperor's Table. For The Gospel According to Andre, Mr. Valentino returns the favor, joining the likes of Diane Von Furstenburg, Manolo Blahnik and Tom Ford in assessing and celebrating the unique style and unprecedented career of the man fashion insiders lovingly refer to as A.L.T.

The Gospel According to Andre opens in limited release on May 25th.
