RED BOOK REPRISE

Philanthropy is a beautiful thing. And it was particularly beautiful in the case of Valentino's Red Book

Philanthropy is a beautiful thing. And it was particularly beautiful in the case of Valentino's Red Book, a compendium of 40 specially-commissioned photographs celebrating Valentino's signature hue. Edited by the late, great Franca Sozzani, former editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia, and published in 2000, the book was created to benefit the Children's Action Network, an organization that helps economically disadvantaged, artistically gifted children continue their education, with all proceeds from sales going to the group. Additional funds were raised at an auction of all the original prints by participating photographers.

And what a group of photographers! Helmut Newton, Juergen Teller, Steven Meisel, Deborah Turbeville and Herb Ritts were among the famous camera-snappers who dug into the Valentino archive and outfitted their muses in Valentino red looks dating as far back as 1960. Newton's muse was his wife June; Ellen von Unwerth and David Bailey picked perennial Valentino faves Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell, respectively, while Karl Lagerfeld shot Valentino tribe member Rosario Saxe-Coburg. Gisele, right at the start of her legendary modeling career, posed for Paolo Roversi. Even Mr. Giammetti made it into the lineup, lounging poolside near a red-clad Malgosia Bela in a panoramic shot by Meisel. Made with the participation of so many friends of the maison and loyal, longtime collaborators, Valentino's Red Book was truly a labor of love—as befits any true work of charity.
