Sharon Stone at Cannes Film Festival

This week, the movie stars return to the Croisette, with the opening of the 66th Festival de Cannes. Of course, Cannes is a film festival-some of the eagerly anticipated films in competition this year include The Great Gatsby and Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring-but it’s at least as famous for its seemingly endless and dizzyingly glamorous red carpet. And Valentino has made countless starring appearances there.

Of all the memorable Valentino moments at Cannes, perhaps none are more indelible than Sharon Stone’s appearances at the festival in 1995. Both a fan and a friend of Mr. Valentino, Stone reigned as Hollywood’s #1 Femme Fatale, and as she made the festival rounds to promote her film The Quick and the Dead, she wore nothing but Valentino. Leaving the premiere of the documentary Unzipped, Stone scandalized onlookers by opening her skirt and flashing the paparazzi-a rather chaste gesture, insofar as the stunning silver Valentino gown she was wearing included hand-beaded hot pants. On another day, photographers caught Stone in an unguarded moment, horsing around with a little boy and looking as fresh as springtime in a white Valentino dress with a bouffant skirt. And then, of course, there was that most iconic Valentino moment of all, as Stone arrived on the red carpet in a beaded gold Valentino sheath, and Mr. Valentino himself on her arm. Who could ask for a better accessory?
