VALENTINO: TOP MODEL LINDA

Some of her most memorable appearances were on the Valentino runway: For Mr. Valentino, Linda-the-shapeshifter transformed into the most glamorous version of herself

She’s one of the original “supers.” Alongside pals Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell, she’s a member of the 1990s’ holy “trinity.” She’s fashion’s foremost chameleon. Leggy, lush-lipped Linda Evangelista launched her modeling career in Paris in the mid-1980s, and thanks to her preternatural command of the camera lens, she’d go on to appear on more than 700 magazine covers and serve as the longtime muse of photographer Stephen Meisel.

The Canadian amazon also walked virtually every major catwalk. Some of her most memorable appearances were on the Valentino runway: For Mr. Valentino, Linda-the-shapeshifter transformed into the most glamorous version of herself—to wit, over the course of a single year, going curly and blond as she donned a pastel floral cocktail suit for the Spring/Summer 1991 haute couture show, swanning out in a chic brunette chignon and bejeweled, Indian-inspired brocade tunic at the Autum/Winter couture show a few months later, and turning heads with her bright, red-tinted updo at the Spring/Summer 1992 RTW, where, unforgettably, she emerged from backstage in a strapless column gown of vertical black and white stripes.

Evangelista’s Valentino campaigns were just as statement-making. Here, again, the chameleon worked her wonders: Whether tossing her long hair hither and thither as she posed in a corset-waist gown of Valentino red, or, with her signature long pixie cut slicked over one eye, stretching out her long legs to reveal the grid pattern of a pair of sheer evening trousers, Linda never failed to capture the energy of a look. That’s why she’s not just a supermodel, but a legend.
