NAOMI CAMPBELL 2

That walk. According to Andre Leon Talley, the one thing that made gorgeous Naomi Campbell stand out when she began modeling as a teenager, it was her distinctive catwalk swagger. Other gorgeous girls knew how to smile, how to pose, but Naomi knew how to move, how to invest every step down the runway with her next-level charisma. "You have to remember, she was a dancer," Talley told Vogue.com in 2015. "She lifts any look that she's wearing." This year's recipient of the CFDA's Fashion Icon Award, Campbell has never stopped lifting looks: She's as much of a favorite of designers as she was back when Mr. Valentino was seduced by the cat-eyed London native back in the early 1990s.

"When I met her, she was already 'Naomi,' the difficult, spoiled child," reminisced Mr. Valentino for that the Vogue.com appreciation of Campbell cited above. "Arriving late for fittings, choosing what she wanted to wear, and always asking to open the show or close it." Campbell's, shall we say, forcefulness, hardly dampened Mr. Valentino's enthusiasm for her—great pals, she did indeed open and close a number of Valentino shows, not to mention star in several indelible Valentino campaigns. More recently, she's gone from accompanying Mr. Valentino down the runway for his end-of-show bow to keeping him company on the red carpet, for instance at the premiere of Valentino: The Last Emperor. Indisputably, they're both fashion royalty. As Mr. Valentino told Vogue.com, Campbell "imposes her own status as queen." Brava on another jewel in your crown, Naomi!
