WINTER CLOTHES

A peek into the Valentino archives turns up beaucoup inspiration for braving winter weather in high style

Good lord, it's cold. With temps in America's Northeast corridor dipping below zero, the temptation is to give up on fashion and adapt a duvet or sleeping bag into some sort of serviceable outerwear. Surely chic can't withstand cold like this?

Think again. A peek into the Valentino archives turns up beaucoup inspiration for braving winter weather in high style. For example; Maison muse Naomi Campbell demonstrated one ace option, strutting down the Valentino Fall/Winter 1994 Haute Couture runway in a bon chic, bon genre miniskirt suit all of fuzzy, snuggle-worthy purple mohair. The suit's cut is classic; the color oh-so au courant, given that purple is Pantone's 2018 color-of-the-year. Top off with statement coat and you're ready to hit the snowy streets.

As for statement coats… The Valentino Fall/Winter 2005 Haute Couture show proves that the most statement-y outerwear statements are made with embellishment. Check out the trim white coat embroidered in a feathery pattern of black sequins, or, for even more textural excitement, the Hana Soukupova-modeled croc jacket with crystals dangling from the belt and shoulder and fur trim from collar to hem.

But even if the deep freeze has got you feeling Nanook of the North-ish, Valentino has a style upgrade for you. Check out Karolina Kurkova, swaddled up in a hooded anorak in the Valentino Fall/Winter 2003 show: Though the hooded look riffs on that utilitarian standby, the military parka, Mr. Valentino has nipped the silhouette and given the ensemble a glamorous gloss by pairing the jacket with a coordinating slinky skirt. A sight for wind-sore eyes! And meanwhile, just remember: Spring will be here soon.
