Met Gala 2017

Valentino and Monica Bellucci

What do Comme des Garcons and Valentino have in common? Not much, you'd assume, aside from the fact that both of these storied fashion brands show in Paris. And yet both names were to be found on the invitation to this year's Met Gala—Comme des Garcons because the avant-garde brand, and its designer, Rei Kawabuko, are the subject of the current blockbuster show at the Anna Wintour Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Valentino because the maison was one of the May 1stgala's sponsors.

Mr. Valentino and Mr. Giammetti were thus unofficial co-hosts of the event—and their signature joie de vivre was much in evidence at the dinner, where Maison Valentino creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli joined them in welcoming a coterie of friends to New York City's most glamorous social occasion. Mr. Valentino's official date for the evening was Monica Bellucci—recently seen on his arm at the opening of the opera La Traviata in Spain—while Mr. Piccioli brought along his own trio of beauties, model Freja Beha Erichsen, Academy Award-nominated actress Ruth Negga, and multi-threat superstar Jennifer Lopez. (J. Lo came with her new beau A. Rod, aka baseball legend Alex Rodriguez.) Naturally, all the ladies were clad in Valentino, with Lopez getting all the shimmy out of her draped turquoise dress as she danced along to the evening's performance by co-host Katy Perry. Longtime Valentino tribe member Carlos Souza rounded out the starry table.

Many more Valentino pals were on-hand at the gala. Gisele Bundchen was another co-host. Kim Kardashian was there, of course. Gwyneth Paltrow made a splashy return to the Met on the heels of the announcement that she will be launching a print edition of Goop, with an assist from Conde Nast and its artistic director, Anna Wintour. Donatella Versace was rolling with her own crew, including tennis phenom Serena Williams, and Claire Danes, who was at the Valentino table at the 2015 Met Gala, was on the guestlist again this year, alongside her husband Hugh Dancy. By all accounts, this year's event was especially convivial and upbeat—and for proof, look no further than Mr. Giammetti's Instagram video of J. Lo in her turquoise gown, dancing.
