Supermodels

When before or since have so many Amazonian beauties been gathered on one runway? The occasion? The Valentino Fall 1994 haute couture show, in Paris. The talent: The uber of the supers. Linda, check. Naomi, check. Christy, check. Not to mention Claudia Schiffer, Carla Bruni, Helena Christensen, Amber Valletta, Nadja Auermann, Tatjana Patitz. And more. It was the dawn of the waif era, but Mr. Valentino stuck to his guns, and cast only the most dazzling of women to model his high-hemline suits and crinoline gowns with rosettes on the bustier. As Mr. Giametti recalls in his book, Private:

“Valentino loved supermodels! He and Gianni Versace were the two who really launched them—When Suzy Menkes wrote that the clothes did not need supermodels, I bought a page in the Herald Tribune saying ‘You are wrong, Suzy!’”

Bless the internet: There’s actually video of the Fall 1994 couture on YouTube. See the supes for yourself, and see if you don’t find yourself thinking, boy, they just don’t make models the way they used to.
